Gandhi




Gandhi was born in Pobandar, India, on October 2nd 1869. His father died when he was still a teenager. At the age of 13, he married Kasturba Gandhi who was three years younger and the marriage lasts for 62 years until her death in 1944.


As a young man Gandhi left India and study law in London. Then he spent two decades working in South Africa securing rights for Indian expetriates. It wasduring this time that his political reform through non-violence which he called Satyagraha was born. This moment meant resistance of tyranny through mass civil disobedience, firmly founded upon ahimsa, total non-violence, which led India to independence and inspired movement of civil rights an freedom across the world. This way, when he returned to India, Mohandas Gandhi emerged as politician and religious leader in the fight for Independence from Great Britain and was accorded the country's Father of the Nation. India freed itself from Britain on August 15th 1947. Five months later, on January 25th, 1948 Gandhi was shot by conservative Hindi.

The Effect of Computer Assisted Language Learning in Teaching English Grammar on the Achievement of Secondary Students in Jordan

Journal chosen for this article review is “The Effect of Computer Assisted Language Learning in Teaching English Grammar on the Achievement of Secondary Students in Jordan”. I took it from The International Arab Journal of Information Technology, Vol. 6, No. 4, October 2009 which were written Abdallah Abu Naba'h, Jebreen Hussain, Aieman AlOmari, and Sadeq Shdeifat, Department of Curricula and Instruction, The Hashemite University, Jordan Department of Educational Foundations and Administration, The Hashemite University, Jordan.

The general aims of the research are to develop an instructional program for teaching item of English of English language which is the passive voice and to investigate its effect on developing students’ achievement in English grammar. The researchers used 3 questions to measure the validity of this research; Are there any statistically significant differences (α< style="mso-spacerun:yes"> where Four sections were randomly assigned to the experimental group (scientific, literary males and scientific, literary females); each section consists of (20) students selected and assigned randomly, and four assigned to the control group (scientific males (20students), literary males (27 students), scientific females (45 students) and literary females (40 students). Finally the findings of the research show that there is a significant effect of the use of a computerized software program on the achievement of students. This effect is in favor of the experimental group who were taught via computer. Second, it proves that there is an effect on students’ achievement attributed to gender. This effect is in favor of male students. Third, this indicates that there is an effect on students’ achievement attributed to the stream of study (scientific, literary). This effect is in favor of the scientific stream students.

This research gets me into understanding the needs of technology in education. The technology is rich with the interactive approach that can basically develop personal knowledge on anything and everything that we want to know because the experts start to use it as a medium to help the students. While looking, reading and digesting this journal on, “The Effect of Computer Assisted Language Learning in Teaching English Grammar on the Achievement of Secondary Students in Jordan”, it gives me the idea that the using of computers in improving language skills are relevance and valid. This research was well conducted because the researchers revealed clearly the aims of the research, the methodology, the subject, and the findings. They narrow it specifically to the secondary students and on passive voice which showed the study is very focus. The discussions of the findings are very thoughtful, clear and easy to be understood. The researchers also recommend the other researches to be done which can reveal further information of this study. In Malaysia, the use of computers and technology in education sector basically become popular. Somehow, there still a big number of schools which lack of these facilities due to budget tight. Somehow or rather, there are challenges to be highlighted in implementing technology in Malaysian classroom; infrastructure: physical and basic (electricity), connectivity, technical support, stability of the system, teachers’ skill and aptitude and the focus in examination (public), (Dr. Salbiah Ismail, Educational Technology Division Ministry of Education, Malaysia). The concept of ICT in education, as seen by the Ministry of Education, includes systems that enable information gathering, management, manipulation, access, and communication in various forms. The flexibility of computer assisted language learning basically can help the students to improve their language skills. This will depend on the students’ attitudes and behaviors upon it. The use of technology in learning will be more effective once the students themselves engaging into the activities provided with the guide from teachers. Finally, the using of computer assisted language learning in teaching and learning passive voice is effective to the students. It will help the students to have fun and interactive learning experiences. Thus, it will be best to be practiced in the classroom.

1. What does the application attempt to "teach"?

This website covers all the elements in language learning; writing, listening, speaking, grammar and more. In my humble opinion, the contents in this website can help the teachers and students to have better and clear information of the usage and implementation on English. This is because this website covers all of these categories;

It's interesting to know that the website references, questions and elaboration for each topics comes from variety of English books. Students and teachers will not just learn about English, somehow, they will have wide communication which involve forum, debate and pen pal activities with others in all around the world. To make learning English as the interest for each individual, I can see the strong cooperation given by many in helping one another to improve not only on the English language theories but also in the usage of English in practical life where te information always updated from time to time. Thus, this website is very meaningful to everyone.

2. What sort of things is the application user expected to do with regards to learn the content?

The application users for this website can be vary. The users can be students, teachers, lecturers and even professors. Thus, they must know what they want to focus on once they are in the homepage area. If the users weak in vocabulary, they can click on the vocabulary activities and tests. It's very important to recognize the mission of their learning before the users start to learn the content. Knowing what they want to learn will make the process become more meaningful. By involving in activities, the users can increase their interest to know about the content. After that, they can test their understanding to see their performance in the area that they focus on. In my opinion, to master the language, the users must first master the content and to master the content, the users must do a lot of practice and study in the language area that they want to master. By answering the questions and quizzes in this website can determine one's understanding. This website provides other links on online books and others website. So, the application users will have more and more reference to look at.

3. What sort of computer skills is the application users expected to have in order to operate/ access/ use the application?

The users of this website must have the very basic of computer skills like;
  • Identify hardware components; mouse, keyboard, computer screen
  • Identify cursors
  • Select menu items
  • understand the purpose of browsers
  • Understand the hyper-links/ navigation
and there are more basic computer skills that the users must know before using not only this website but others too. This website is very focus where the users easily search for what they want to learn just by looking at the topics listed. The users must know how to use the mouse because they have to click on the correct answers, click on the topic, click on the activities and many more. It's not very complicated to use this website because this website is sufficient enough to allow the learning activities to succeed.

4. While you are playing/ accessing/ assessing the application, does it remind you anything you do in a classroom, or with a teacher, or with fellow classmate, or in self study?

While playing, accessing, assessing the application , it not only bring me to what I learn in classroom, with my teachers back there in primary and secondary schools, with my friends who help me in explaining the contents and even in my own observation and study... the application is basically improving all the contents I learned in school with teachers and friends and also adding more knowledge while having online discussion and forum with others. In my opinion, learning by using website help me to interpret what I learn in meaningful way because the activities are very focus and friendly. It gives high impact on my understanding by having variety of activities with the questions and references provided. It's like having business matching where I am able to gain more profit when successfully cooperate with different kind of fields and entrepreneurs. The same thing I feel when playing, accessing and assessing with the application, I receive more understanding when involving in learning with many approaches. It helps a lot in individual learning activities.

5. Can you pinpoint some theories of language learning and/ or teaching underlying the application?

There are many theories of language learning underlying the application. One of the obvious theories involved are "silent way" and "communicative language teaching". I said "silent way"because the application users have to respond to the commands, questions, and cues where the activities encourage the understanding of the contents without modelling teachers. The application users are responsible with their own learning and must develop independence, autonomy and responsibility. The main point is the users are able to learn language. Second, the theory of communicative language teaching also involve in the application due to it's objective which reflect the needs of the learner where the activities include functional skills and linguistic objectives. The application users are the one who communicate, involve with the processes such as information sharing and negotiation of meaning.

6. How well is the constructivist theory of learning applied to the chosen website(s)?

The constructivist theory of learning applied to the chosen website very well. By the way, as we know constructivist theory will go through the processes of accommodation and assimilation where individuals construct new knowledge from their experiences. The application users incorporate with the activities and contents provided in this website into the existing knowledge that they already have about English. After that, the users will manage the new knowledge to fit with their previous one. Thus, the responsibility of learning must be carry out by the users. Furthermore, users are the one who have to look out for meaning. According to Von Glasersfeld (1989) sustaining motivation to learn is strongly dependent on the learner’s confidence in his or her potential for learning. Thus, the users will develop their learning skills automatically where they will be responsible for what they want to learn.

7. In 1980s abd early 1990s, there was a major debate whether the computer was "master" or "slave" to the learning process (HIggins and Johns, 1984). In relation to your evaluation-was the computer a replacement for teachers, or merely an obedient servant to students?

Computer is a device which cannot replace us the special creature in this entire world as human. Computer is also the flexible medium of learning and teaching. To determine whether computer is "master" or "slave" is depend on us. The purpose of device is to make the human life becomes easier. Somehow or rather, if the users define computer as their "master", that means they depend on it fully. Teacher means one who teaches and instruct. The issue of computer a replacement of teachers or not can be determine whether the computer able to teach us or not. We do learn many from the computer. Somehow, the activities in the computer are conducted by the real teachers as in human. Then, computer is actually a medium of learning activity between the users and the teachers. Not only that, I don't think computer is merely an obedient to students because nowadays, there are many softwares created to ensure that the learning activities become valid, critical, friendly and relevant. Finally, the one who produce the meaning of computer is the individual. Once they believe it, they act with it.

8. Would you like to use the application yourself in your future work?

Absolutely yes. This is because of its' flexibility to spread the knowledge and information in a lot of ways. It provides elaborations, activities, games, quizzes, tests, forums, discussions and many more. I can browse online books and jurnals from the website too. These books will help me to have deeper understanding and wide view of the issues that I am searching for. Receiving comments and views from others will make learning become more critical and interesting. The application will motivate me to help others in assisting their learning progress in long distance and also improving my quality as individual by learning from others as well. Thus, I strongly agree to use the application in my future work.

1. My name is Nurliyana binti Baudin. I am the eldest in my family. People used to describe me as easy-going and unique person. I love fashion and business where at this moment I help my parents to handle their factory. The government agencies like MOA, MARA and SIRIM always invite me to give talk on marketing and share my experiences in business with the new entrepreneurs. I do play classical guitar but I just can play t
he songs that I practiced. Whatever people described me, I am just ordinary person. What people see in me is myself who faced so many tragedy and hardship in my previous years until now. In my humble opinion, in whatever i do, I always do it whole-heartedly. I try my very best
to give full commitment and instill pure sincerity in achieving what i dream.

2. I used to call myself as technology retarded. Thus, to rate my skills on computer and devices is obviously weak. I usually use my laptop to open facebook, wordpress, formspring, youtube and playing games. All the sites that I listed are the common and easy sites to open and use. Not only that, i also love to search for the things that i am interested with. Somehow rather, in terms of creating websites, computer softwares and hardwares and something related to them, i often just straightly ask the professional to guide. Honestly, I am still learning and improving my computer skills in order to complete the taks given successfully.

3. Refer to question 2, I have the very little knowledge on software and hardware. Based on my knowledge on software, i only know the application part such as; video games, the microsofts like words, power point, publisher, excel and others. I do know computer's hardware that I always use like pen-drive, hard disc, mouse, CD, joystick and more.

4. I love to learn via computer because it is flexible especially online learning activity. I can do discussion, forum and debate about any issues that rise up. Moreover, i will always updated with the current information in all over the world. In improving my teaching, fashion, business and music, I always watch youtube to be inspired by the professional. Not only that, I can improve my language skills through the videos and websites. During my free time, i love to update my blog, twitter, formspring, facebook and more. This is where my friends can update with my life. I feel appreciated when i received comments from my friends in many countries. To hear the comments and opinions from different people will widen my views about what I do and like.

5. I cannot use computer and technology during my practicum because the LCD and computer in the technology room cannot function. I only able to use the radio that I brought to teach grammar by using songs.



6. Using computer and technology in teaching is a very good way to increase the students' interest to learn anything because of the flexibility. The teaching will be more meaningful when the teacher use the correct materials, clear information and provide with creative videos or pictures. The misused of computer and technology can harm the teaching activity too. Thus, it is important for the teachers to know their limit on choosing the teaching aids.

7. I hope that I will be able to fulfill all the tasks given in this course. The most important thing, I want to improve my knowledge about everything that related to this course.
